Social Science is the study of human activity, human relations, society and social environments. Social science is an important subject as it allows us to understand and maintain our society as a whole. Social Sciences are a broad classification of more specific subjects such as Anthropology, Communications, History, Archeology, Geography, Political Science, Economics, Sociology and Psychology.
Social Sciences are very popular at Boston Colleges. As a matter of fact there are over 300 degrees from dozens of colleges available. This represents about a 1/4 of all degrees offered in the Boston Area.
Social Sciences can be subdividediinto sub-areas including the following:
Anthropology
Anthropology is the study of human existence. Anthropology can be subdivided into sub-fields such as Archeology, Linguistic Anthropology and and Cultural Anthropology. In the Boston Area over ten colleges offer this subject on various levels including Boston University, Northeastern, Harvard University and MIT.
Communications
Communication studies human communications and covers the entire range from from human personal interaction to mass media communications such as broadcasting or online communications. Over a dozen Boston colleges offer Communications including Boston Univesity, Northeastern, UMASS, Simmons College, Framingham Stae University, Curry College .
Economics
Economics studies the production, distribution and consumption of goods and services. Economics is one of the key sciences that business and government rely on. Economics majors have a number of possible career paths such as insurance, journalism, government and business. In the Boston are you can study economics at over a dozen collegees including, Tufts University, Amherst College and Salem State University.
Education
Education is a popular choice in social sciences as so many teachers are required starting with elementary school up to higher education. Education programs cover the entire range for actual teaching, administration and policy. The Boston Area has over a dozen schools with education degrees including, Boston University, Harvard, Suffolk and Emmanuel College.
History
History is the study of past human events and developments. There are over a dozen colleges in the Boston area with History majors at any level. This includes most of the large universities like Boston University as well as smaller colleges like Brandeis and Endicott college.
Linguistics
Linguistics is the science of human language. It focuses on technical cognitive aspects as well as social influences. In the Boston area you can study linguistic at MIT and Gordon College.
Political Science
Political science is the study of political institutions, processes and behaviors. It is an important subject as it investigates how people think, choose and participate in politics. In the Boston area you can study political science and over a dozen college at all levels including UMASS, Bridgewater, Emmerson College, Wellesley colleges.
Psychology
Psychology is the study of behavior of humans, and includes many sub-fields of study such areas such human development, health, clinical, social behavior and cognitive processes. There are many Boston area colleges that teach psychology on all levels. This includes all the large universities and many smaller colleges such as Emmanuel College, Curry College, Lassell College and Regis College.
Sociology
Sociology is the study of human beings and how they interact with each other. It focuses on the function and interactions of groups of people who have common attributes, locations and and shared customs. Sociology degrees are available from over a dozen Boston Area colleges such as Tufts, Harvard, Umass and Northeastern University
Geography
Geography is the study of Earth’s surface and its relationship to people and their environment. Geographers study the earth's societies as well as its physical properties. Today Geographers use modern technology such as Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and computerized Geographic Information Systems(GIS) to record and map earth's features, topography and sociatal data. In the Boston area you can study Geography at BU, Tufts, Bridgewater State and Framingham State
