Tufts University is a private research university located in Medford and Somerville, near Boston. The School was founded in 1852, and today it is ranked among the top-tier research institutions in the United States. The university is organized into ten schools, including two undergraduate programs and eight graduate divisions. 

The School of Arts and Sciences offers more than 70 undergraduate degree programs, and students have their pick from thousands of undergraduate courses. It awards the degree of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science. Students who major in the liberal arts may select a major from more than 30 academic departments and programs. They may also select a second major from the liberal arts or engineering or pursue an Interdisciplinary Studies major, which allows students to design their own majors. Minor certificates and special programs are also available.

The School of Engineering offers several Bachelor of Science programs, including biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, and mechanical engineering. It also offers a Bachelor of Science program in computer science. as well as engineering physics, engineering psychology, engineering science, and engineering.

Graduate degree programs include Master of Science, Master of Engineering, Master of Science in Engineering Management, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The school is particularly noted for its cross-disciplinary research and education programs. A number of interdisciplinary graduate programs are offered that have close ties or formal connections with other professional schools at Tufts. These include programs in water: systems, science, and society; water and diplomacy; bioengineering; and human factors.

The majority of courses are taught by full-time professors, most of whom hold a PhD and many of whom are practicing professionals in their fields. The university strives to foster personal relationships between students and faculty, encouraging individual attention in both the classroom and research settings.
