Boston College (BC) is one of the nation's best and most selective universities. It is a large university conferring more than 4,000 degrees annually in more than 50 fields of study. Faculty members are committed to both teaching and research, having earned nearly $60 million in research grants in the last year alone.
The university offers bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and doctoral degrees through its nine schools and colleges: College of Arts & Sciences, Boston College Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, Carroll School of Management, Lynch School of Education, Connell School of Nursing, Boston College Graduate School of Social Work, Boston College Law School, Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, and Woods College of Advancing Studies.
Founded in 1825 by the Jesuit Benedict Joseph Fenwick, S.J., the university is committed to maintaining and strengthening the Jesuit, Catholic mission. It strives to integrate intellectual, personal, ethical and religious formation and to unite high academic achievement with service to others. The school emphasizes its strong core curriculum where all students receive a “well-rounded” liberal arts education regardless of their chosen major.
Boston College's sports teams are called the Eagles and they compete in NCAA Division I as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Men's sports offered by the school include baseball, basketball, cross-country, fencing, football, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, sailing, skiing, soccer, swimming, tennis and track & field. Women's sports include basketball, cross country, fencing, field hockey, golf, ice hockey, lacrosse, rowing, sailing, skiing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track & field and volleyball.
The main campus is in Chestnut Hill, 6 miles west of downtown Boston. It is situated on a gorgeous historic campus that includes over 120 buildings and is set on a hilltop, overlooking the Chestnut Hill Reservoir. A "Boston College" streetcar station on metro Boston's "T" is located in front of the school gates and connects the school to Boston's city center and to other destinations in the Boston metropolitan area. Due largely to its location and presence of buildings featuring Gothic towers that seem to be reaching into the sky, the Boston College campus is generally known as the "Heights" and is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
