The Beaches

Boston's beaches are a popular escape on the sometimes hot summer days. Pack a picnic and a cooler with cold beverages, and head for one of the many beaches in the area. There is much to choose from in the city or a short distance away. From the sand dunes of Cranes Beach to a pebble beach on one of the harbor islands, there is a beach for everyone's taste. Here are some of the favorites:

A short ferry ride from the Boston waterfront is Spectacle Island. From the charming pebble beach, you get a unique perspective on the Boston skyline and the busy harbor boat traffic. There is a hiking trail and a restaurant, and it has all the facilities to make an outing to the island a success.

Revere Beach

If you are looking for a beach with lots of fun summer activities that is easy to get to, come to Revere Beach. Easily connected by public transportation, there is much going on at this three-mile-long crescent-shaped beach. There are fun little restaurants and stores along the boardwalk, and people are playing volleyball and frisbee-tossing everywhere. There are a number of official events on the beach, such as sand sculpture festivals, kite festivals, fireworks, and movies.

Carson Beach, South Boston

Carson Beach Boston

This sandy beach is one of the best swimming beaches in Boston. It has just been completely renovated by the city and has all the modern amenities you expect. Nice sand, gently sloping beaches, and moderate waves make swimming here a pleasure. You can walk over to Castle Island and get an ice cream or lunch, or walk for miles on the beautiful Harbor Walk in either direction.

Cranes Beach

This beach is probably considered the best in the North East.  Only thirty minutes from Boston and you are transformed into a different world with miles of soft sand,  beautiful sand dunes and a wild and interesting landscape.  On low tide, there are many sandbars to explore.  Although it has all the amenities you would expect, it is generally not too crowded.

Winthrop Shore Beach

Share the beach with the seagulls, bring your own food because there are few amenities, and enjoy the plenty of parking and peace.
